Loose Leash Walking
|
I taught Jake loose leash walking with the helpful video's from Kikopup and Tab289, I found that by stopping when the leash goes tence, calling the dog back to my side, then going forward is his reward instead of treating him each time. Being consistant gives you faster results. To stop Jake from reacting to strange dogs, I used counterconditioning. A great book on this subject is "Click to Calm" by Emma Parsons. This takes a lot of work and practice at your dogs own pace. You don't want to try and rush this, work at your dogs comfort level. First you need to find your dogs comfort level when around other dogs, if he remains calm, for example 20 ft away, then start there. Click and treat your dog for remaining calm and focusing on you. Slowly decrease the distance between you and the stresser. It's important to always stay just under your dogs threshold. If you are on a walk and another dog approaches and your dog is not ready yet to meet a strange dog, try and cross to the other side of the road, keeping a comfortable distance away. If you get into a situation where you can not avoid the other dog, then move as far away as you can, as the dog passes. Click and treat your dog when he is quiet, even if that is only for a few seconds between barks. Never punish him for barking.I would just like to say thank you to ALL the talented dog trainers I've met here on Youtube. Thanks for showing me what I can achieve using PR and clicker training, thank you for your support, advice, friendship, inspiration and helpful video's!As a result of your help, Jake received his Novice Trick Dog Title last month, he no longer pulls me on leash, he no longer reacts by barking and lunging at strange dogs, his list of dog tricks is always growing constantly and we both are having a blast learning each and every day. A special thanks to Ashley & Kaine, you started it all for me. You inspired me to train Jake using PR and to become a dog trainer :)Kikopup, Pamelamarxsen, zSianz1, Tab289 where would I be without you. : )
